Jean-Marc Dubruel de Broglio Reflections on a genocide…of helplessness and despair.

Born out of hopelessness but having to do something… although it makes no difference.
The slow process of painting each stick is calming. The bone white paint covering each branch unifying the fallen limbs, each losing its identity, abandoned to a new landscape.

In public view the pile of sticks grows each day…’

Many thanks to Jean-Marc for the work.

‘My background before persuing fine art was in archaeology and the history of art.

I have a degree in Archaeology and I used to participate in fieldwork. I worked on archaeological sites with burials: the burial of political prisoners in Poland during Stalins rule; a 17th century cemetery in central London.
The observations I made of the process of decay of bones and soft tissue, of bone disease has had an impact on my art practice.

Clay/ceramics is always present on archaeological sites, often the dating of a site is based on the ceramic shards found.
Clay is in common use today, it is in the bricks of a wall, pavements, toilets, toothpaste, makeup, medicines.
Clay has a symbolic aspect; according to the myths of various cultures it is the material used to create humans.’
